Speciality: Vitreoretinal diseases and surgery: retinal detachment, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, ocular trauma, retinal laser, floaters etc. Modern cataract surgery with multifocal and accommodative implants. Intravitreal lucentis and avastin injections for macular degeneration, vein occlusions, diabetic retinopathy. General ophthalmology.

Mr Ajai K Tyagi is at present the Clinical Director and Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre (BMEC), Birmingham. He was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Vitreo-retinal surgery in 2001. BMEC is one of the largest eye hospitals in Europe and is a tertiary referral centre for complex eye conditions. Mr Tyagi receives referrals and treats patients from across the country. He also teaches medical students and trains surgeons from the UK and across the globe in vitreo-retinal surgery. He has presented at various international conferences and has published research papers in prestigious medical journals.

Mr Tyagi graduated from Goa Medical College, India and went on to complete his Masters in Ophthalmology from the same Institute. He obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 1994. He completed his Registrar training in general Ophthalmology at BMEC. Following this he underwent sub-specialist training in Vitreo-retinal Surgery at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He also undertook an Observership at John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore to study new surgical techniques in managing patients with retinal and in particular macular diseases. Following that he was one of the early surgeons in the UK to perform complex surgeries such as macular translocations for patients with macular degeneration.

In 2010, Mr Tyagi was awarded MBA with distinction from Aston Business School. He specialised in Strategic management and his project for dissertation was awarded the Industrial Administration Group prize for the best project by a part time MBA student.
