Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon

Professor Sue Lightman is the Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at UCL/Institute of Ophthalmology and Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital and now at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in addition. For over 20 years she has run an ocular inflammation and infection service at Moorfields, seeing patients with all types of uveitis and ocular infection of all different types together with experience in the diagnosis and management of intraocular lymphoma.

Professor Sue Lightman trained as a Doctor at Middlesex Hospital, University of London where she was the Senior Broderip Scholar and Gold medallist. After qualifying she spent several years in Medicine and General Surgery before undertaking training to become an ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital. She did a PhD in Ocular Immunology at the National Institute for Medical Research in London and then went to the National Eye institute at the National Institutes of Health in the USA as an MRC Travelling Fellow and then an NIH Fellow, for further scientific and clinical training. She returned to the UK to take up a position as an MRC Senior Clinical Fellow and Senior lecturer at UCL/Institute of Ophthalmology and shortly afterwards became a Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital. In 1990 she became the first Duke Elder Professor of Ophthalmology and in 1993 successfully applied for the University Chair of Ophthalmology which she currently holds.
