What causes a cataract?

Cataracts are caused by clouding of the lens of your eye.

Your lens is made of mostly water and protein. The protein is arranged in a precise way that keeps your lens clear and lets light pass through it.

But as we age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. This is a cataract. Over time, the cataract may grow larger and cloud more of your lens, making it harder to see.

the position of a cataract

The older you get, the more likely you are to develop them. Women are at greater risk of developing a cataract than men. For younger people, factors increasing the risk of developing a cataract include:

  • Diabetes
  • Previous eye trauma
  • Other eye conditions
  • Steroid medicines over a long time
  • Family history of cataracts
