Mr Andrew Luff

MA, FRCS, FRCOphth

Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon

Speciality: Vitreoretinal surgery and treatments for macular disease.

Mr. Luff qualified from Oxford University and Guys Hospital Medical School, and initially trained as a General Surgeon, before moving to Ophthalmology in 1988.

After Fellowship postings at Moorfields Eye Hospital, Mr. Luff was appointed Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Southampton Eye Unit in 1995, where he developed a particular interest in vitreoretinal and cataract surgery.

Mr Luff works closely with the Academic Department of Ophthalmology in Southampton, and was one of the original pioneers of intravitreal injection, used to treatment of Wet age-related macular degeneration. In recent years, he has promoted the technique of vitrectomy under local anaesthesia and has particular expertise in sutureless vitrectomy surgery, combined with the insertion of multifocal implant lenses.

Mr Luff was recently chosen as the first surgeon in the world to perform the new LMI procedure, a remarkable lens which could help patients with severe macular degeneration.

In addition to his position as consultant ophthalmologist with Optegra, Mr Luff also runs highly-successful vitreoretinal practice, and is a recognised surgical lecturer for Ophthalmic Trainees, General Practitioners and Optometrists.
