Is Laser Vision Correction for me?

Laser Vision Correction can be safely recommended for most people, but there are some exceptions. Certain eye or medical conditions and some general health problems may make the procedure unsuitable.

Individual care – every time

Please remember every individual is different. You will need to have a free, no obligation consultation with one of our ophthalmic surgeons to determine your own suitability.

Laser Vision Correction may not be suitable for people who need very strong glasses, or whose main problem is dependence on reading glasses. The good news is that Optegra has the expertise required to offer lens implants, so if you are not suitable for Laser Vision Correction, worry not, we may still be able to help.

There is no upper age limit for Laser Vision Correction, but it cannot effectively correct eyesight for individuals who have presbyopia and only need reading glasses. Patients who wear bifocal or varifocal glasses may benefit from refractive lens surgery using accommodating or multifocal lens implants.

Even if you are not suitable for Laser Vision Correction, Optegra has other vision correction procedures that may help

Find out more about the conditions laser eye surgery cannot treat

Here are some of the conditions that Laser Vision Correction, also known as Laser Eye surgery cannot treat. However, by having a free, no obligation consultation with one of Optegra’s eye experts we may be able to help you.

Keratoconus is a progressive condition leading to the abnormal thinning and steepening of areas of the cornea. This results in an irregular surface which may be dangerous to attempt to treat with Laser Vision Correction techniques.

At Optegra, we have invested in the Wavelight Concerto excimer laser platform in several of our hospitals. This is one of the most advanced laser systems in the world. It is able to treat keratoconus patients in conjunction with a technique known as corneal cross-linking in which the corneal surface is strengthened.

Amblyopia is another term for a lazy eye. It is characterised by poor vision in an otherwise healthy eye. Amblyopia normally only affects one eye. Laser Vision Correction cannot improve the quality of vision in a lazy eye.

You may not be able to have laser Vision Correction if you have the following:

  • Diabetes – your condition must be controlled
  • Glaucoma – your condition must be controlled
  • Severe dry eyes – suitability for treatment depends on the severity of your condition
  • Certain medical conditions – such as Rheumatoid Arthritis

Of if you are:

  • Under 21 – your prescription must have been stable for a few years
  • Pregnant/Breastfeeding – you will need to wait 3 months after weaning
