Biography
Mr Serafeim Antonakis is a Consultant Ophthalmologist (substantive post) at the University Hospital of Southampton NHS Trust. He specialises in the surgical and medical treatments of vitreous and retinal diseases: retinal detachment, diabetic eye disease, macular problems (macular hole, macular pucker/epiretinal membrane, age-related macular degeneration, including intravitreal anti-VEGF therapies), retinal vein occlusions together with modern cataract surgery.
Mr Antonakis comes from Greece where he studied Medicine at the University of Patras and underwent specialty training in Ophthalmology and awarded his Title of Medical Specialty (CCT) by the University of Athens in 2012. Along with his professional development as a doctor he completed his postgraduate studies and awarded a Master’s Degree in Healthcare Management.
He had the privilege to work as senior Vitreoretinal Fellow in London’s best-known teaching hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital, under the guidance of world-leading VitreoRetinal consultants such as Mr.Laidlaw and Prof.Williamson, expanding his horizons as a VR surgeon in the surgical, clinical and research field.
He was honoured to be a member of one of the world’s leading eye hospitals Moorfields Eye Hospital (City Road) as a Medical Retina Clinical Research Fellow and of the Institute of Ophthalmology of UCL as Senior Research Associate in Visual Neuroscience Lab.
Along with his duties as Vitreoretinal Consultant in University Hospital of Southampton NHS Trust he is also as a certified clinical and educational supervisor of Wessex Deanery and Royal College of Ophthalmology for VR fellows, Trainees in Ophthalmology and CESR trainees. He is also an active member of the University of Southampton as supervisor of Research Projects for Medical Students and a regular lecturer for their Ophthalmology teaching.
He has extensive experience with the innovative 3D Visualization System, from his St Thomas’ work, that has changed his way of doing eye surgeries. He introduced the electronic diary for patients of the Vitreoretinal Theatre service in UHS NHS Trust which is now used for the whole Eye Theatre Services and continues to develop the electronic patient record referral system within the Eye Unit and through the peripheral sites of UHS NHS Trust, improving patient’s safety and delivering care.
Mr Antonakis is a member of the UK Vitreoretinal Surgeons Society (BEAVRS), the European Society of Retina Specialists (EURETINA), the European Society of Cataract Specialists (ESCRS) and he preserves his links with the Greek Ophthalmological Societies as a member of Greek Association of Vitreo-Retinal Surgeons (GVRS) and Hellenic Ophthalmological Society (HOS).
