Vision correction secrets of Hollywood actors

Aside from being three of the most famous actors in the world, what do Dame Judi Dench, Johnny Depp and Mila Kunis all have in common?

That’s right; you guessed it (as this is an eye healthcare blog!) – They’ve all experienced vision problems. But you would never guess to look at them, would you?

Mila Kunis is regarded by many as one of the most beautiful women in the world – with her eyes being one of her defining features, so it might surprise you to learn that she was blind in one eye for many years, due to a chronic eye condition called Iritis.

Iritis causes inflammation to the coloured part of the eye, the iris. And like Mila Kunis, many sufferers can go on to develop cataracts and vision loss as a result of the condition. But in 2011, Mila had lens replacement surgery – where the damaged lens was removed and replaced by a new artificial lens that she says saved her sight and restored her vision.

As for Johnny Depp – everyone’s favourite hero from the Pirates of the Caribbean - you probably thought he wore those tinted glasses to make him look even cooler than he already does, right? Wrong. Depp is actually almost 100% blind in one eye and near sighted in the other. And without his prescription glasses he is unable to see very much at all, which makes his performance in the Pirates of the Caribbean and other Hollywood blockbusters even more impressive.

Johnny Depp has spoken publicly about his vision problems, but as with most things in his life he likes to keep the details private, so the actual eye condition he is suffering from, and has done since birth, has not been fully reported. Unfortunately for Johnny, however, it would appear that his condition cannot be treated with laser eye surgery or refractive lens exchange and he has to make do with the blue-tinted lenses. But we think he pulls them off pretty well!

In the case of Judi Dench - unlike younger actors Mila Kunis and Johnny Depp - she suffers from a more common eye condition that often affects people over the age of 65: age-related macular degeneration or AMD. When talking about her condition, Judi was recently reported as saying she “falls all over the place like a mad, drunk lady.” She’s making light of it, of course, in true Dame Judi style, but age-related macular degeneration can be a serious condition that results in vision loss for many sufferers. But the good news is there are a variety of different treatment options available for AMD – that can be very successful if you can act early before the disease progresses.

And these three actors are not alone; here are some other big names from Hollywood that suffer from vision problems that might surprise you, too:

  • Whoopi Goldberg suffers from Glaucoma

  • Nicole Kidman and Courtney Cox – both known for their stunning blue eyes – have both had laser eye surgery

  • And the action hero of all action heroes, Brad Pitt, has had his vision corrected with laser eye treatment, too
