Bake your way to healthy eyes

If you’re watching the new series of the Great British Bake Off, or if you’re just a fan of baked goods, you may
not realise that there are plenty of ingredients that are great for your eye health.

Eggs are often essential to cake recipes, and are rich in cysteine, amino acids and sulfur. Sulfur may help protect the lens of your eye from cataracts

Blueberries contain anthocyanins, which can help improve your vision in low light – so add these to your fruity bakes.

Carrots are packed with pro vitamin A known as ‘carotenoids’ which help protect the surface of the eye – the cornea. Carotenoids are also a powerful antioxidant which can help slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration.

Walnuts contain a good amount of Omega-3, a fatty acid which is found in high concentration in the retina. This is important for normal eye function by protecting the blood vessels and light sensing cells responsible for vision.

So now you know which ingredients can keep your eyes in peak condition, here are some recipe ideas from BBC good food to put them to good use!

Blueberry soured cream cake
Sugar-free carrot cake
