A Business Administration student from Manchester has become the first ever apprentice at her local specialist eye hospital.
Ailish Hession, 19, joined Optegra Eye Hospital Manchester
in October 2015 for a one year contract as a Business Administration apprentice. The role enables her to gain valuable experience of working within a busy office environment whilst working towards her qualifications.
The apprenticeship is a full time role and fully supported by Salford City College, where Ailish attends one day per month as part of her Business Administration course. An assessor also visits her at the hospital every four-six weeks to review progress and monitor achievements.
Ailish says, “When looking for jobs, everyone wants experience as well as qualifications which is difficult to collect when you are only 19. This apprenticeship is giving me experience within a real work environment as well as gaining the qualifications that organisations would recognise. My ambition is to work in HR so this role is helping me towards that goal.
“I support the team with all the admin tasks and have really enjoyed talking to patients too - practical skills which will help me when I enter the job market.”
Christine Parkinson, Patient Services Manager at Optegra Eye Hospital Manchester, says, “The variety of work within the hospital is an ideal setting to kick start a career as an administrator. Ailish is thriving and I am so pleased with how the role has worked that I am now looking for a second apprentice to join our growing team.”
