Preparing for laser eye surgery: What you need to know

It’s important that you feel completely at ease about every stage of your laser eye surgery, including what to expect before, during and after the treatment.  Here are a few tips on how you can prepare...
  • We recommend that you do not drink alcohol 24 hours before or after your treatment, as alcohol dehydrates your body and will dry out your eyes, possibly irritating them.
  • Have a light meal before your treatment, as it’s important to keep your sugar levels up
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Bring sunglasses with you to wear after surgery. Your eyes might be light sensitive and the glasses can also act as a barrier between the eye and dust/dirt
After the treatment, as well as applying any eye drops as instructed, it is important that you remember to blink frequently for the first few days to help keep the eyes moist. We also recommend that you rest your eyes as much as possible. Activities such as watching TV, reading and computer work are best avoided for prolonged periods, i.e. no more than two hours at a time, as they may cause dryness and irritation.
