iStent

iStent is a treatment for glaucoma.

What does iStent involve?

Step 1: Your in-depth consultation

Following a detailed assessment, your Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon will discuss the best course of treatment of primary open angle glaucoma for you. The consultant will be the same person who carries out your glaucoma surgery and your checks at follow-up appointments.

Step 2: The iStent procedure

iStent is a microscopic trabecular bypass implant. This means a tube implant inserted into the natural drainage system channel of the eye to increase the drainage of fluid from the eye and reduce eye pressure on average by 20%* or more. It can also reduce the use of eye drops for glaucoma. 7 out of 10* patients have been able to stop using eye drops completely following this procedure and the remainder have been able to reduce them.

iStent will not reverse any damage already caused by glaucoma or bring back any lost vision.

It can be successfully used in combination with cataract surgery, and in eyes that have already had cataract surgery.

The iStent is made from non-magnetic titanium (the same material used for replacing heart valves, so it won’t be rejected by the body or cause an allergic reaction). It will not set off airport scanners or cause problems if you need an MRI scan.

Step 3: Rest and recovery

Following your glaucoma surgery, you will be taken to our recovery suite to rest before being given details of any eye drops required and returning home. Your consultant will also provide you with antibiotics to use following treatment.

Step 4: Your aftercare

Your consultant will see you for a follow-up consultation to check on your progress, assess the results and answer any questions you may have about treatment for glaucoma. You will be provided with an emergency contact number so that if you do experience any unexpected symptoms, you can contact us.
