New Forest Author Has Vision Restored

Cataract procedure was ‘a walk in the park’

Known locally as ‘Anne of a thousand walks’, Hampshire author Anne-Marie Edwards is a tribute to a life of fresh air.

As a young girl her inspirational father taught her to use a map and compass, and at the tender age of 10 she would truant from school to roam the moors!  Now, as a spirited 81 year old who still loves walking and gardening, Anne has turned her passion for the local countryside into a career; as she has recently completed her 39th book!

Combining her love for literature – Anne was previously an English teacher – with her joy of walks, she now enjoys working with her husband Mike to create photographic, guided walk books on Hampshire, Dorset and Somerset. Her writing has given her energy and spirit, but this interest was put at risk recently when cataracts in both eyes were affecting Anne’s vision.

She describes: “My eye sight was generally getting weaker but I was determined not to let it stop my enjoyment of our beautiful local nature. Vision is so important – and always has been in my family! My father was a desert scout with Lawrence and so he depended on excellent eye sight to hunt for enemies in the desert; and they say I have got his eyes!”

In order to continue to live life to the full, Anne went to local Optegra Solent Eye Hospital for treatment of her cataracts and is delighted with the outcome. She says: “I was told my eye sight could not be better! I had not realized how bad it had got as the cataracts came on so gradually but now I have my vision back it is fantastic.  I can use the computer without glasses and even see brush strokes in oil paintings so I am looking forward to my next writing project!”

Anne describes the eye procedure: “I was very nervous at first, as the very thought is rather horrible! But everyone there was so kind and smiling; they gave me such a lovely welcome that I felt completely reassured.  Within a few days of my first procedure I began to read quite tiny print and realized I did not have my glasses on – and that was with just one eye treated!”

Consultant ophthalmic surgeon, Peter Hodgkins, at Optegra Solent Eye Hospital said: “Mrs Edwards’ vision is now remarkable and I am so pleased that this straight-forward procedure has been able to make such a positive difference. Cataract procedures are the most commonly performed elective procedures and can improve quality of life no end. It was wonderful to help such a lovely lady who can now continue living life to the full in the New Forest, and create more and more books for others to enjoy!”

Anne’s career began at Manchester University where she studied English Language and Literature, followed by an MA in Southampton. Her career then took off teaching English until the late 60s.  She then focused on writing and broadcasting in Hampshire, where she has lived for over 40 years, giving recommendations about local walks, pubs and places of interest.

Her walk books highlight areas of interest, and she has combined her two loves, of literature and the countryside, by also writing about the areas local to Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy and Shakespeare, capturing their lives and where they went, with walks to reflect their history.

One of Anne’s favourite walks is to climb up Hod Hill in Dorset and wander back down along the river, while her walks following Jane Austen in Hampshire land reveal many treasures!
