Biography

Professor Balaskas graduated from the Medical School of the University of Athens, Greece before undertaking specialty training in Ophthalmology at the Jules Gonin Eye Hospital, Lausanne, Switzerland. During that period Dr Balaskas also completed a higher degree (Medical Doctorate in Research, MDRes) at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland.

Prof Balaskas completed two senior sub-specialty Fellowships in Medical Retina at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Manchester, UK and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London UK before being appointed as Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. In 2018, Prof Balaskas was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmologist in Medical Retina at Moorfields Eye Hospital, and Director of the Moorfields Ophthalmic Reading Centre and Moorfields Clinical Artificial Intelligence Lab. In recognition of his academic contributions Prof Balaskas was promoted in 2020 to Associate Professor at the University College London, Institute of Ophthalmology and in 2023 to full Professor of Medical Artificial Intelligence.

Prof Balaskas has led an extensive portfolio of multi-site clinical trials funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) evaluating digital health technologies, such as telemedicine, Medical AI, and modern ophthalmic imaging. His research group has pioneered the development of cutting-edge AI technologies for AMD, Geographic Atrophy, and Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Prof Balaskas has received awards as one of the Best Principal Investigators by the NIHR in three consecutive years and as Data and Digital Champion for NHS England. He was the winner of the Best Digital Innovation HSJ award and was nominated as Best Digital Leader and Best Digital Innovator of the year. In 2025 Prof Balaskas moved on from the NHS to join Optegra Eye Hospital, alongside continuing his academic work.
