OPTEGRA REACHES MILESTONE FOR CPD OUTREACH

3 May 2023

20 March 2023… Optegra Eye Health Care has supported 6,000 optometrists around the UK in the past year with a series of engaging CPD events.

Throughout 2022, the specialist eye hospital group provided 11 interactive webinars on varying ophthalmic topics, as well as 23 face-to-face events at its regional locations.

Each face-to-face event awards three-five CPD points, while attendance at webinars awards one.

The most recent events include over 70 optometrists attending an event ahead of the launch of Optegra Eye Clinic Brighton, with surgeon Mr Alex Shortt talking on post-cataract complications.

Also an event at Optegra Eye Clinic Maidstone, was led by consultant ophthalmic surgeon Mr Robert Petrarca who spoke to local community optometrists about glaucoma and high-volume cataract surgeries.  As the Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on ophthalmology services in the UK, this lecture covered the typical NHS trust numbers and waiting list management.

Mr Petrarca also provided an update on MIGS (Minimum Invasive Glaucoma Surgeries) and high flow cataract process.

The optometrists secured three CPD points by completing visual recognition image quizzes related to the lecture.  In Optegra Eye Clinic Maidstone, the quiz focused on Glaucoma, OCT and OCT images.  Attendees complete the quiz at the session with responses reviewed by Optegra optometrists.

Dr Clare O’Donnell, Head of Optometry and Optegra Eye Sciences, said: “We place huge value on these events as they provide a constant form of interaction and dialogue with our colleagues in the community.  As well as building and maintaining relationships with optometrists and having the opportunity to respond to any questions, the CPD events also allow us to share our knowledge to support their training.

“We are fortunate to have leading ophthalmic surgeons within Optegra who are always willing to share their expertise and work closely with optometrists to raise standards and ultimately help provide best possible treatment for patients.”

Over the past year Optegra has responded to delegate requests regarding topics covered.  Speakers have therefore shared insights on glaucoma and high-volume cataract, keratoconus, cataract and postoperative complications, dry eye and red eye management, OCT and real-world decision making; as well as hosting peer reviews for ICL and IP prescribers.

All CPD lectures are interactive as delegates can contribute with poll questions or a Q&A session.  Some sessions have case examples, and some lectures are purely case base based. There are also opportunities for peer-review where delegates can bring along their own case studies for discussion to reflect real-world decision making.

In the coming months, Optegra invites optometrists and dispensing optometrists to the following events:

  • 27 March – webinar on Keratoconus with Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon Maghizh Anandan. 1 CPD point available. Register here
