With over 25 years of experience in ophthalmology, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon Mr Mahmoud Radwan brings a wealth of surgical expertise and a profound personal commitment to sight restoration at Optegra. In this edition of our Meet the Consultant series, he shares what drew him to eye surgery, how modern cataract treatments have transformed lives, and the simple ways we help nervous patients feel completely safe.

The Precision, The Privilege: 25 Years in Eye Surgery

“From the very beginning of my training, I was struck by how profoundly vision shapes a person’s confidence, independence, and identity,” Mahmoud explains.

For Mr Radwan, ophthalmology is a speciality that successfully blends precision and delicate surgical skill with cutting-edge technology and deep human connection. “The moment a patient opens their eyes after surgery and feels immediate relief or joy is a privilege I never take for granted.” He remains deeply grateful to be part of a speciality where the impact is both immediate and life-changing.

Mr Radwan chose to join Optegra because of its strong patient-centred culture and the exceptional team behind it. “The professionalism, collaboration, and supportive environment make it an ideal place to deliver high-quality cataract and glaucoma care.”

Witnessing Transformation: The Most Rewarding Moment

When asked about the most rewarding part of his job, Mahmoud says the answer is simple:

“The most fulfilling aspect of my work is witnessing the immediate transformation that comes with restored vision. That moment when a patient opens their eyes after surgery – filled with relief, joy, and gratitude – is deeply moving and never loses its impact.” He sees his work as supporting people as they reclaim their independence and confidence.

The Evolution of Cataract Surgery

Cataract treatment has changed enormously since Mahmoud first started practising. Early in his career, patients often stayed in the hospital for a couple of days, had stitches that later needed removing, and usually depended heavily on prescription glasses afterwards.

“Today, we offer highly precise, personalised vision correction using advanced diagnostics and modern lens options, including toric, enhanced monofocal, EDoF and multifocal lenses. Combined with safer, sutureless surgical techniques and faster recovery, patients now enjoy far better vision and much more predictable outcomes. We’re also proud at Optegra to offer drop-free cataract surgery, which reduces the need for postoperative drops and makes the recovery process even easier and more comfortable for patients.”

Can you walk us through what happens during cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is a quick and safe procedure to improve cloudy vision. Mr Mahmoud explains what you can expect during the operation, designed to help you feel comfortable and informed:

  • Numbing the eye: You get eye drops to numb the eye, and sometimes a small sedative to help you relax.
  • Tiny opening: The surgeon creates a very small opening at the edge of the cornea.
  • Removing the cataract: A small instrument breaks up the cloudy lens and gently removes it.
  • New lens insertion: A clear artificial lens (IOL) is placed in the same position as the natural lens.
  • Self-sealing: The tiny opening usually closes on its own without any stitches.

After Surgery:

Following the procedure, you will rest for a short time immediately after the procedure, and then you will be able to go home the same day.

  • The eye may feel a little sore or blurred at first, but vision usually improves within a few days.

At Optegra, we are proud to offer drop-free cataract surgery, which significantly reduces the need for the traditional schedule of postoperative drops. For patients whose treatment plan requires or includes drops, you will receive those medications and detailed instructions to ensure your eye heals smoothly and safely.

Blinking During Surgery: Reassurance for Nervous Patients

It’s completely normal to feel anxious before eye surgery, and the team does everything they can to help you feel relaxed. We start by simply talking to you, explaining what will happen in a clear, friendly way. If you’re still feeling very nervous, we can give you a mild sedative.

For anyone who feels claustrophobic, we can also use a clear drape so you don’t feel covered or closed in. Mahmoud confirms that you can blink normally during cataract surgery, as the eyelids are gently held open with a small device. “If you stay relaxed and avoid squeezing, the surgery remains completely safe and smooth.”

During the surgery, the team keeps talking to you, letting you know what’s happening and reassuring you at every step. If it helps, someone can hold your hand throughout the procedure.

How Often Should You Have an Eye Test?

Mahmoud stresses that regular eye examinations are vital not only for maintaining good vision but also for detecting early signs of eye conditions.

  • Standard Frequency: Most people should have an eye test every two years.
  • More Frequent Checks: Some need more frequent checks, including those with glaucoma, diabetes, high prescriptions, or a history of eye disease.
  • Urgent Symptoms: People should seek an earlier eye test if they experience symptoms such as reduced vision, double vision, eye pain, redness, flashes, or floaters.

Simple Precautions: Life After Cataract Surgery

For the first few weeks after surgery, there are a few simple precautions to help your eye heal safely:

  • Avoid rubbing or pressing on the eye. This is the most important rule.
  • Avoid heavy lifting, bending deeply, or strenuous exercise for about 1-2 weeks, as these can increase pressure in the eye.
  • Keep water and soap out of the eye for the first week (showers are fine, just be careful).
  • Avoid swimming, hot tubs, and saunas for at least 2 weeks.
  • Avoid driving until your surgeon confirms it is safe and your vision meets the legal standard.
  • Most normal daily activities – walking, reading, watching TV, using the phone – are safe right away.

A Dedication to Sight

Mr Mahmoud Radwan’s career, spanning over 25 years, is a testament to the belief that restoring sight transcends mere clinical procedure – it is about restoring a person’s independence and joy. His deep commitment to blending delicate surgical precision with patient-centred care defines his work at Optegra. Whether through offering advanced lens technology or simply providing the reassurance needed before surgery, his focus remains unwavering: ensuring every patient receives the very best care and the chance to see clearly.
