Meet the Consultant: Stephen Lash

In our latest instalment of the Meet the Consultant series, we sit down with Mr Stephen Lash, a Vitreo-retinal surgeon whose career has spanned the full evolution of modern eye care. With over 25 years in ophthalmology, Stephen combines deep technical expertise with a genuine enthusiasm for patient outcomes.

A Journey from Optometry to Advanced Surgery

Stephen’s roots in eye health go back further than most, giving him a comprehensive understanding of the patient journey from the first check-up to complex surgical intervention.

“I have been in eye health since my optometry days in 1994. I have been an ophthalmologist for 25 years and a Vitreo-retinal surgeon for 18 years,” Stephen shares.

Having joined our team over a decade ago, he has seen firsthand how a dedicated eye hospital can transform the patient experience. “Optegra offered the first purely ophthalmic service in the private sector locally, and I started working here in 2010. It is well equipped, well run, and the staff are fantastic, so I really enjoy working here.”

The Art and Impact of Surgery

While many consider surgery a high-pressure environment, Stephen finds a unique sense of fulfilment in the operating theatre. For him, the precision required is as much a passion as it is a profession.

“I really enjoy surgery, it’s my hobby,” he admits. But beyond the technical skill, it’s the life-changing results that drive him. “The most rewarding part of my job is when I can actually restore sight to those who have lost all sight in one eye. That is an incredible privilege. After that, delivering excellent care to very high standards in a very efficient environment that is also very relaxed.”

Expert Tips for Modern Challenges

Living in a digital-first world often takes a toll on our vision. Stephen advocates for a proactive approach to eye health, especially for those working from home who suffer from eye strain or dryness.

  • The 20-20-20 Rule: “Take regular breaks and stare into the distance (hopefully through a window).”
  • Preventative Care: “If need be, use artificial tears to prevent symptoms rather than to treat them.”

He also notes how our environment – and even our mood – is tied to our vision. “Watery eyes are more common in the cold. I have also had cataract patients with S.A.D who improved after surgery and feel brighter!”

Debunking the Myths

Medical misconceptions can often cause unnecessary anxiety for patients. Stephen is happy to set the record straight on one of the most common (and slightly gruesome) myths: “We do not take the eyeball out and rest it on the cheek.”

Instead, modern surgery is minimally invasive and incredibly sophisticated. This is particularly true for cataract patients, where the technology is moving at a rapid pace. “Lens choice is improving all the time, and it’s very possible to achieve a high degree of spectacle independence.”

Why Optegra?

For NHS patients and private patients alike, the choice of provider matters. Stephen believes the “Optegra difference” lies in the marriage of high-level expertise and a streamlined patient journey.

“The main benefits are efficient, high-volume surgeons who are very experienced and deliver excellent care. The environment is great, and the waiting around is  kept to a minimum.”
