Optegra launches vital new service to monitor Dry AMD

Leading eye care specialist, Optegra, is launching a brand new monitoring service to improve its support of patients suffering from dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Going live this month, Optegra Birmingham Eye Hospital, a private ophthalmic unit, is offering patients a regular monitoring service to ensure any changes in their AMD are detected as quickly as possible, and treatment instigated where necessary.

The brainchild of Birmingham Consultant Ophthalmologist, Professor Jon Gibson, he explains: “Many patients that we see in the NHS with dry AMD are understandably anxious to know if their condition is worsening or if they might be at risk of developing wet AMD, and ask if they can be monitored on a regular basis.

“Although currently there is no treatment available for dry AMD, many patients would like to be regularly assessed. The NHS cannot effectively offer this present, given the other demands placed on it in busy eye clinics.

“We have realised that there is an opportunity to support our patients – both medically and emotionally – by setting up a new service where they can be jointly managed by consultant ophthalmologists at Optegra in conjunction with their own optometrists in the community, and so providing regular monitoring. As part of this process we can keep them updated about progress in new therapeutic developments for dry and wet AMD, that hopefully will proceed to effective treatment for both types of AMD in the near future.”

Patients at Optegra Birmingham Eye Hospital will now be able to book a one hour consultation where they will undergo a thorough eye examination and state of the art autofluoresence retinal imaging. The latest technologies are used to analyse the back of the eye thus enabling the macular specialists to advise each patient regarding the individual risk profile for progression of AMD.  Patients will then have a six month check up with their local optometrist, using a prepared protocol, followed by a final 12 month review at the hospital with further imaging.
