Website Accessibility

This accessibility statement applies to this Optegra website. It outlines how we have tried to make this website accessible to all users and how we plan to increase and improve accessibility in the future.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • Increase or decrease the size of the text on our webpages by using the 3 A’s on the top right hand corner of the page. Click on the largest “A” to get the largest font, or the smallest “A” to get the smallest font.
  • Understand which sections of the site and page are clickable with clear hover states implemented across the site.
  • Clear text contrast. We have attempted to use the most suitable colours for people who have limited sight, so it is accessible to as many people as possible. We have also added colour box overlays to improve text visibility and clarity.
  • Use screen readers for text and for image descriptions. Relevant images have ‘alt’ text descriptions. If you hover the cursor over an image, the description will become visible.
  • Click on external links that will open up a new browser window. To return to the Optegra website, close the new browser window.
  • Navigate a lot of the website using a keyboard. Use the ‘arrow’ keys to scroll up and down a page. Use the ‘tab’ key to move between links, then click ‘return’ or ‘enter’ to select a link. Use the ‘backspace’ key to go back to the previous page.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • There is a limit to how far you can magnify text.
  • You cannot modify the line height or spacing of text.
  • There are some text contrast limitations.
  • PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software.
  • Some older videos do not have captions.
  • You cannot skip to the main content when using a screen reader.

Feedback and contact information

Enforcement procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). If you’re not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Optegra is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard. The website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Low contrast between text and background

Some headings and buttons have text with a low contrast to the background colour. Where possible we have tried to ensure the colour contrast is accessible for all users and we are working with our website development agency to add colour overlays to all text blocks to help improve accessibility of site content.

No alt text applied to some images (decorative)

Some images do not have a text alternative because they are decorative images rather than informative. This means people using a screen reader cannot access the information. When we upload new images to the website we’ll make sure they meet accessibility standards.

Language of PDFs and other documents missing

The language of PDFs on site has been flagged as non-identifiable or the lang attribute is invalid. This functionality allows screen readers to read the content in the appropriate language and facilitates automatic translation of content. We will work to fix this and ensure future document uploads have this attribute included.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. We update our roadmap to review and amend PDFs or documents from 2018 onwards to include the language attribute so that we meet accessibility standards.

Image alt text

Images that are used for decoration do not require alt text. Therefore, we will not be adding alt text to these images. We will make sure all future and new informative images added to the site have alt text to meet accessibility standards.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We are always looking at ways to improve accessibility on our website. Our website development agency runs the audits and provides recommendations for us to implement. Some actions we are currently taking to improve our website accessibility are listed below. This is not an exhaustive list.

  • Colour Add colour overlays on text blocks to improve contrast and readability.
  • Language Plan to implement the language attribute with a valid value across all existing PDFs, post-2018, and include in new documents added to the site.
  • Videos Include subtitle text on all new videos we publish moving forwards.
