Glaucoma Treatment

Glaucoma Treatment

Glaucoma is caused by increased pressure within the eye. Although this condition normally develops quite slowly, by the time it has been diagnosed it may have had a significant impact on a person’s life, causing blurred or double vision and sometimes loss of sight.

Glaucoma falls into two categories. The most common form, open angle glaucoma, occurs when the eye’s drainage canals become clogged over time. This prevents the correct amount of fluid from draining away and causes the internal pressure to rise. A much rarer condition, closed angle glaucoma (also known as acute or narrow-angle glaucoma), occurs when the space between the iris and cornea through which fluid passes is unusually narrow and becomes blocked. When this occurs, the inner eye pressure can rise sharply and cause pain, nausea, blurred vision and redness in the eye.

Glaucoma Treatment at Optegra

Depending on the type and severity of the glaucoma, your eye care consultant may recommend eye drops, glaucoma laser eye surgery or conventional glaucoma surgery as the best option for you. Our glaucoma treatments are all performed under local anaesthetic and whichever option your consultant recommends, the objective will be the same: to reduce the pressure causing the glaucoma and preserve the vision in your eye as safely and painlessly as possible.

At Optegra, we have some of the most advanced laser, surgical and imaging equipment available, meaning that our glaucoma analysis and treatments are among the best in the world.

Post Glaucoma Treatment Care

After your glaucoma treatment you will be taken through to our comfortable recovery room. Here we will ensure you spend some time resting before returning home. Your surgeon will advise you to rest for a few hours more once you are back at home and to get a good night’s sleep. This will help you to feel better more quickly and should speed up your recovery.

For most of our glaucoma procedures, we will ask you to return to our hospital for a check-up within a few days. Your surgeon will assess your progress, make sure you’re recovering well and will be happy to answer any questions regarding your continuing recovery at this stage. Following glaucoma surgery, vision can be blurred for up to six weeks, but most patients find their eyesight returns to the same level that it was prior to surgery well within this timeframe.

Frequently asked questions

Are there any complications?

Like any surgery, laser surgery can cause side effects, such as inflammation. We provide drops to treat any soreness or inflammation inside the eye. Following conventional surgery, vision can be blurred for up to six weeks, but usually returns to the same level it was prior to surgery. Other possible side effects are cataracts and inflammation or infection inside the eye. These are all treatable and if any of these problems develop we will create a treatment plan to suit you.

Will I need to keep taking glaucoma medication?

This depends on your personal condition, however many patients need to continue taking their glaucoma medicine after surgery.

Will my vision be affected?

Glaucoma surgery is effective at preserving existing vision but cannot restore what has already been lost. If you have lost some sight from glaucoma, your Consultant will be able to advise you on our low vision services and devices, which may help you make the most of your remaining vision.

What are the success rates of laser and conventional surgery? Studies over a one-year follow-up period show that in older patients, conventional surgery is successful in about 70-90% of cases. Studies on laser surgery show that it is very effective at reducing inner eye pressure in many patients.

Will the condition return?

In some cases pressure in the eye may begin to increase after time. If this happens, glaucoma drops or another operation may be necessary.
