Wavefront

Light passes through the eye in the form of a smooth curve, referred to as a wavefront. If the wavefront hits any imperfections as it travels through the eye it causes distortion in vision.

Wavefront guided surgery uses your own individual wavefront measurements to correct refractive problems.

Wavefront technology was originally developed to measure and correct tiny imperfections such as those in astronomical telescopes. When the Hubble Telescope was first built it gave disappointing results, but wavefront diagnosis revealed many microscopic imperfections in the lens which were too small to be detected before. When corrected, the results produced the best telescope in the world, giving the most incredible images.

Wavefront correction is a major advance in Laser Vision Correction surgery, as it can adapt the treatment for each individual eye. It measures imperfections in the eye 25 times more precisely than regular methods, so even subtle variations are picked up, resulting in truly personalised treatment. This sophisticated technology gives better results for night vision and minimises glare and haloes.

Our state-of-the-art excimer laser has two wavefront platforms – Wavefront optimised and Wavefront customised, one of which will be tailored to suit the precise needs of your eyes. Wavefront treatment is suitable and beneficial for a wide range of prescriptions, including unusually shaped corneas and other complex problems. This unique procedure offers the potential to see better than is possible with contact lenses or glasses.

Previously, only lower order aberrations could be treated with laser surgery. But due to the developments in wavefront technology, both higher and lower order aberrations can now be treated, resulting in the best visual outcomes.
