Sheffield South East MP Clive Betts has welcomed better access to cataract surgery across the city, following a visit to Optegra Eye Clinic Sheffield. The purpose-built clinic on Carbrook Hall Road offers both NHS and private treatment, helping residents avoid lengthy travel or waiting times.

During his visit, Mr Betts met with patients, clinical teams, and senior leaders at Optegra to learn how the clinic is working in partnership with the NHS to treat more patients faster.

High-Quality Local Treatment

Reflecting on the visit, Mr Betts discussed: “I’ve enjoyed meeting the team at Optegra in Sheffield today and hearing about the great work that they are doing with the NHS to bring down waiting times for people with cataracts.

From touring the clinic today, I can see that patients who are referred here will be experiencing the highest quality facilities with excellent patient care and impressive outcomes. Services like this one are making it easier for my constituents to access NHS cataract treatment quickly and locally, enabling them to continue to live their lives to the full.”

Local Services Making a Difference

Optegra’s Managing Director, Mat Pickering, who hosted the visit, shared his thoughts: “It is an absolute privilege to be part of a hospital group which restores vision to cataract patients, as the impact affects all aspects of life. It really does make a huge difference for people, helping them continue hobbies, work, driving and maintaining their independence.”

Mr Pickering also raised concerns with Mr Betts about NHS capacity and patient waiting times. “I spoke candidly about the constraints being placed on the sector by the NHS and the negative impact this is having on patients, and it was encouraging to hear that Clive shares our passion for always putting the patient first.”

Accessing Cataract Treatment at Optegra

Patients diagnosed with cataracts can now ask their GP or optometrist to refer them directly to Optegra Sheffield for NHS treatment. All NHS cataract treatment at Optegra is provided free of charge to eligible patients.

Alongside NHS care, the Sheffield clinic also offers private vision correction options, including laser eye surgery and lens replacement, for patients looking to reduce reliance on glasses or contact lenses.
