At Optegra Eye Clinic Sheffield, we facilitated a visual transformation for brothers Paul and Jason Cross. Both men, aged 60 and 54, chose to address their lifelong struggles with extreme prescriptions by undergoing Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) on the same day. This coordinated clinical journey highlights the profound personal impact of advanced lens technology, as both brothers moved from decades of visual restriction to shared clarity in a single afternoon.
The Heavy Burden of High Prescriptions
Both brothers had faced significant visual impairments since childhood. Paul had lived with a strong +7 prescription, a condition that presented unique challenges during his twenty-year career in the West Yorkshire Police. Paul recalls how uncomfortable contact lenses forced him back into eyewear: “Unfortunately, I had dry eye and the lenses were uncomfortable, so I reverted back to wearing glasses.”
In high-pressure environments, his dependence on eyewear was a liability.
“I found myself in challenging situations where my glasses were knocked off my face and broken. One time, when I was the designated riot van driver and the only person licensed to drive, I had to tape my glasses back together so we could get back to the station,” said Paul. “Night shifts also became harder as I struggled to read paperwork.”
Beyond professional risks, his vision hindered his personal joys, such as cycling.
“They would slip down my nose, and I was worried about them falling off, as I wouldn’t be able to see without them to get home safely. Shortly before surgery, I broke my glasses, and it cost nearly £1,000 to replace them.” The emotional catalyst for his surgery came during a holiday with his granddaughter. “I could hear her giggling, but I couldn’t see her face. That really made me feel sad. Those moments are precious; not everyone gets the joy of grandchildren. I didn’t want to miss out.”
Overcoming Lifelong Visual Limitations
Jason’s experience was equally demanding. Living with a +8 prescription and having undergone surgery for a lazy eye as a child, his vision had long been a source of self-consciousness. “It wasn’t cool to wear glasses in those days, so I would hide them or break them, anything to avoid wearing them,” he said.
In his professional life, which required precise measurements for window manufacturing, his eyesight was a constant barrier.
“I made it all the way to 23 years old before I finally started wearing contact lenses. I had a job making windows and was working with small measurements, which were impossible to see without visual help. I was advised not to wear lenses all day, so I would wear my glasses at home – they were so thick that I never wore them out of the house. It really affected my confidence and self-esteem.”
During a regular meetup, Paul mentioned his research into eye surgery.
“I had been doing some research after hearing an advert for Optegra on the radio. When I mentioned it to Jason, he was keen too, although concerned that his eyes wouldn’t be suitable.” Jason’s path to surgery was met with a surge of relief: “I had a telephone consultation initially, and when I mentioned my prescription, they said it might not be possible, so when they phoned back later that day to say I was a suitable candidate, I literally punched the air, I was buzzing! They told me that mine was one of the highest prescriptions they had ever treated.”
The Precision of Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)
The brothers attended their assessments and surgeries on the same day, with Paul going first to pave the way.
“After it was finished, I could tell Jason exactly what it was like. That helped to reassure him, although to be honest, he couldn’t wait to have it done,” said Paul.
The brothers were treated by Optegra consultant ophthalmic surgeon Mr Fadi Alfaqawi.
He noted that “Paul and Jason both presented with complex high prescriptions, which meant they had faced significant vision challenges for most of their lives. Achieving such positive outcomes for them was especially rewarding. Refractive lens exchange is a highly advanced procedure where we replace the eye’s natural lens with a permanent advanced lens technology, such as multifocal lenses, restoring clear vision at all distances. For Paul and Jason, this was the ideal solution, freeing them from the limitations of glasses and contact lenses, enabling them to enjoy excellent eyesight and a new quality of life.”
A New Perspective on Life and Career
The clinical success translated into immediate lifestyle improvements. Now working as an NHS driver, Paul finds that daily tasks have been rendered effortless. “Walking the dog in the rain, cycling the six miles to work each day, it’s all just easier. And of course, I can see the faces of my grandchildren, which is absolutely priceless.”
For Jason, the results were transformative for both his work and his self-esteem.
“Life-changing doesn’t even cover it. It’s not just about the vision; my confidence has increased, and I feel that my quality of life is unbelievable.” At work, the change was undeniable: “The first thing I did was pick up my micrometre to see if I could see the numbers clearly. I could, so I picked up my glasses, snapped them in half and threw them in the bin! I’ve got the best eyes in the house now.”
Today, both brothers have returned to their active lives without the barrier of corrective lenses. What began as a practical decision became a shared milestone of freedom.
“Everything feels easier,” Jason says. “My mood’s lighter.” Paul adds, “We started the journey together, and we’ve come out the other side seeing the world more clearly, in every sense.”
