“I’ve waited my whole life for this freedom”: Donna’s 30-year journey to life without glasses

For Donna Young, wearing glasses had been part of everyday life since she was six years old. With a very strong prescription and severe short-sight and astigmatism, she relied on thick glasses for everything from seeing clearly outdoors to coaching fitness classes.

Now, at 49, Donna has finally achieved something she had been waiting three decades for: the freedom to live without glasses following lens replacement surgery at Optegra Eye Hospital Manchester.

“I never hated wearing glasses because of how they looked,” says Donna, who lives in Disley and co-owns Box n Burn Fitness with her partner, James. “It was more about the feeling that they held me back from so many things.”

Living with a strong prescription

Donna’s eyesight affected many aspects of her life from an early age. Without her glasses, she could see very little beyond the end of her nose, making activities such as swimming and sport particularly challenging.

“Growing up, I avoided sport and physical activity, and swimming was difficult because I couldn’t see properly,” she says. “It’s ironic that I am now a fitness coach!”

As an adult, Donna’s glasses continued to create practical challenges. Her work as a boxing fitness coach meant that she was regularly exercising, moving around and getting hot, which could cause her glasses to slip down her face.

“It made coaching difficult. It was never about vanity. It was about being able to do what I wanted to do without feeling restricted.”

Today, Donna is also preparing to launch a new business focused on pelvic floor health, making clear vision an important part of both her professional and personal life.

Waiting 30 years for the right treatment

Donna first explored laser eye surgery around 30 years ago. At the time, she was told that her prescription was too strong for her to be a suitable candidate.

Instead, she was advised that lens replacement surgery could be an option in the future, once she reached around 50 and her prescription had stabilised.

When Donna approached Optegra again at 49, she discovered that advances in ophthalmology meant she was now suitable for treatment.

“I’ve been waiting 30 years for this, so I was more than ready,” she says.

Having previously worked in the NHS managing surgical teams, Donna also understood the importance of choosing an experienced provider.

Lens replacement surgery involves replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial lens selected to meet the individual patient’s visual needs. The procedure is similar to cataract surgery and, unlike laser eye surgery, removes the natural lens, meaning a patient cannot develop a cataract in that eye in the future.

“It was a pleasure to treat her,” adds Mr Rehman. “After years of depending on glasses, Donna is delighted to enjoy clearer vision and greater freedom.”

What was the surgery like?

Although Donna was excited about the prospect of no longer relying on glasses, she admits she had some concerns before the procedure, particularly around pain.

Her experience was much easier than she expected.

“My biggest worry was pain, but I didn’t feel a thing. Anaesthetic eye drops numbed my eye entirely, so it honestly felt like my eye was having a bath.”

The procedure itself was also quick.

“The whole team made me feel comfortable throughout and it was so quick, only around 30 minutes in total.”

Seeing the world differently

Three weeks after surgery, Donna says her vision continues to improve and that some of the biggest changes have come from seeing details that she had previously struggled to make out.

“Absolutely delighted doesn’t even cover it, and my vision keeps getting better and better. The whole experience has been incredible.”

Donna’s home overlooks Lyme Park, but she says she can now appreciate the view in a completely different way.

“Now I can see the branches on the trees, birds sitting on telegraph wires and even deer in the distance. I knew those things were there, but I’d never been able to see them properly.”

For Donna, these are the moments that have made the biggest difference.

“These everyday moments which most people take for granted have become extraordinary for me.”

The everyday freedom of life without glasses

The benefits have extended well beyond enjoying the view from her home.

Donna says she no longer has to worry about her glasses steaming up in the rain or slipping while she exercises. She has also been able to enjoy something she could not easily do before: choosing sunglasses simply because she likes them.

“After years of being limited by thick prescription lenses, I have finally treated myself to a lovely pair of sunglasses. In fact, I went and bought them two days after my surgery!”

For someone who has worn glasses for most of her life, that simple purchase represented something much bigger.

“I’ve waited my whole life for this freedom. Having worn glasses for so long, I’d accepted they would always be part of my life.”

“But the wait has been worth it. I can honestly say it’s been life changing.”
