When MP for Brentford & Isleworth Ruth Cadbury visited Optegra Eye Clinic, West London, she saw first-hand how the independent eye hospital is helping ease NHS pressures and deliver faster cataract treatment for local people.
Since opening its doors in Hounslow in July 2024, the state-of-the-art clinic has carried out more than 2,000 NHS cataract procedures – free of charge to patients. By providing expert care within just weeks of referral, Optegra has significantly reduced wait times and improved access to life-changing eye surgery across West London.
An Innovative Approach to NHS Eye Care
Ruth’s visit also marked the rollout of Optegra’s latest advancement: drop-free cataract surgery, now available to all NHS patients. This technique uses a simple injection during surgery to eliminate the need for weeks of post-operative eye drops, making recovery easier and more convenient for patients.
Following her tour, Ruth praised the clinic and its collaboration with the NHS: “It’s clear from my visit today that there continues to be a great demand for cataract surgery in the area, and I’m pleased that Optegra is supporting the NHS and providing resources to help prevent waiting lists creeping up again.
“The facilities here in Hounslow are first-class, and I was delighted to meet with the clinical team, who are all so kind and compassionate. Services like this one are making it easier for my constituents to access cataract treatment quickly and locally – enabling them to continue living their lives to the full.”
Putting Patients First
During her visit, Ruth met with clinical staff, patients, and members of Optegra’s leadership team, including Commercial Director Adam Cockley, Marketing Director James O’Shea, and Area Head of Clinical Services Fran Flaherty. The team shared how Optegra is supporting the NHS through innovative care models and efficient service delivery.
Adam Cockley commented: “It was a pleasure to welcome Ruth to our clinic and have an open discussion about the challenges facing the NHS and how we can help.
“Across England, we’re working hard to provide high-quality NHS cataract surgery without the long wait times. It’s encouraging to see support from our local MP for solutions that prioritise patients and protect access to essential services.”
Cataract Treatment That Makes a Difference
Clinic Manager Nimesh Jani explained how cataract surgery works and why it’s such an important procedure: “Cataracts are a natural clouding of the eye’s lens that affects around one in three people over the age of 65. Left untreated, they can make everyday tasks like reading or driving much more difficult.
“The good news is, cataracts are treatable with a quick and pain-free surgery. We remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear artificial one, restoring sharp, bright vision. Many of our patients are amazed at the difference – it’s like seeing the world in HD.”
