In this edition of our Meet the Consultant series, we speak with Mr Amir Hamid, a leading Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Optegra, about his background, patient philosophy, and what patients can expect from treatments such as cataract surgery, laser vision correction, and lens replacement. With thousands of procedures performed, Mr Hamid brings a wealth of expertise, compassion, and clarity to every patient interaction.
A Passion for Precision and Impact
For Mr Hamid, the decision to specialise in ophthalmology came from a blend of technical fascination and human impact.
“I trained in ophthalmology because I was fascinated by how delicate and precise eye surgery is, and how transformative it can be for patients. Vision is such a fundamental sense, and restoring or improving it has an immediate, life-changing impact. That combination of technical skill and patient benefit inspired me to specialise in this field.”
The Joy of Helping Patients See Clearly
What keeps Mr Hamid inspired isn’t just the surgery itself – it’s the people whose lives are changed by it.
“The most rewarding part is seeing the difference good vision makes in someone’s life. When a patient walks in anxious and walks out thrilled because they can see clearly again, it’s incredibly satisfying. I also enjoy building trust; helping patients feel informed and confident about their choices.”
What Makes Optegra Different – Especially for NHS Patients?
With long NHS hospital wait times still affecting many areas of the UK, independent eye hospitals like Optegra offer welcome relief for eligible NHS patients.
“Independent providers like Optegra offer shorter waiting times, access to highly experienced surgeons, and state-of-the-art technology. We focus on personalised care, so patients often feel they get more time and attention compared to larger hospital settings.”
How Do You Help Patients Choose the Right Treatment?
With so many treatment options available today, Mr Hamid emphasises the importance of tailoring care to the individual.
“It starts with a thorough consultation: we assess eye health, lifestyle needs, and visual goals. I explain all suitable options, whether that’s cataract surgery, lens replacement, or laser vision correction, along with the benefits and risks, so patients can make an informed decision.”
Cataract Surgery vs Lens Replacement – What’s the Difference?
Although both procedures involve replacing the eye’s natural lens, their purpose isn’t the same.
“Both involve replacing the eye’s natural lens, but the reasons differ. Cataract surgery isperformed when the lens becomes cloudy, affecting vision. Lens replacement (or refractive lens exchange) is elective, aimed at reducing dependence on glasses or contact lenses, often for presbyopia or high refractive errors.”
The Evolution of Laser Eye Surgery
Modern laser vision correction has advanced significantly, and today’s treatments are more refined and comfortable than ever.
“It’s advanced significantly. Modern lasers are faster, more precise, and safer than ever. Techniques like SMILE and wavefront LASIK allow for highly customised treatments, improving outcomes and reducing side effects like glare or halos.”
The Biggest Myth About Laser Eye Surgery?
Despite its popularity, many people still worry that laser eye surgery is painful or requires lengthy downtime – both of which are far from the truth.
“Many people think it’s painful or that recovery takes weeks. In reality, the procedure is quick, usually painless, and most patients return to normal activities within 24-48 hours. Another misconception is that results don’t last – most patients enjoy long-term vision correction.”
Does Too Much Screen Time Really Affect Your Vision?
With digital device use higher than ever, concerns about screen time and eye health are common, especially among parents. Mr Hamid discussed how prolonged screen time can affect our eyes: “Prolonged screen time is linked to increasing rates of myopia, especially in children. It’s not the sole cause (genetics play a role), but lifestyle factors matter. Taking regular breaks and spending time outdoors can help reduce the risk.”
