Dry AMD treatments

At present there is no specific treatment to reverse the damage or provide a cure for dry AMD. Preventative measures include:

  • Stop smoking
  • Have your blood pressure checked regularly (if considered “borderline”, you should be treated)
  • Wear good quality sunglasses in bright conditions, even in winter
  • Use dietary supplements as they may help to slow the disease progression. The Age-Related Eye Disease Study proved the benefit of high doses of vitamins A, C and E combined with zinc.

A number of implantable telescope and lens systems have been developed to help some AMD patients, in a process similar to cataract surgery.

IMT (Implantable Miniature Telescope): intended to improve distance and near vision in people who have lost central vision in both eyes because of end-stage AMD. Read more

IOL-VIP (Intra Ocular Lens for Visually Impaired People): an implant lens system inserted into the eye to give a telescopic effect. Read more

Monitoring service: a twelve month monitoring service to identify and capture any potential dry AMD developments is available at Optegra Eye Hospital Birmingham and Optegra Eye Hospital Manchester. Read more

Wet AMD treatments

Anti-VEGF Injections (Lucentis, Iluvien, Eylea, Triamcinolone, Ozurdex, Avastin): help to slow down vision loss and, in some cases, may improve sight. Read more

Oraya Therapy™: a breakthrough treatment to maintain or improve vision while reducing the number and frequency of anti-VEGF injections. A non-invasive, outpatient procedure intended as a one-time therapy, available at Optegra Eye Hospital Manchester. Read more
