With over two decades of experience and a passion for sight-saving care, Mr Saruban Pasu brings both clinical excellence and heartfelt commitment to his work as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Optegra. In this edition of our Meet the Consultant series, he shares what inspired his career in ophthalmology, the impact of cataract surgery, and his work transforming lives globally.

A Life-Changing Speciality

“For me, it all began in medical school nearly 25 years ago,” Saruban explains. “I was fascinated by the precision and impact of eye surgery. The fact that a 15-minute cataract procedure could change someone’s life so profoundly drew me in.”

Saruban chose ophthalmology because he recognised that restoring vision isn’t just about optics – it’s about independence, confidence, and emotional well-being. “Being able to read again, drive safely, or simply recognise a loved one’s face can transform how someone lives day to day. That’s what makes this work so meaningful.”

“Doctor, I Can See!”

When asked about a patient who left a lasting impression, Saruban recalls one moment vividly:

“She had a dense ‘white cataract’ – barely able to perceive light. Her husband guided her into the room. She was quiet but clearly worn down by how much her vision had affected her life. We carried out the cataract surgery, and as she lay on the table, she blinked a few times and said: ‘Doctor, I can see!’ She burst into tears – and so did we. It was incredibly emotional. I’ll never forget her.”

When Is It Time for Cataract Surgery?

Cataracts often develop slowly, but there are clear signs that it may be time for surgery. “If you’re finding it hard to read, drive at night, or recognise faces, those are red flags,” Saruban advises. “You might also notice glare from lights or that colours look faded. The decision to operate should be based on how much your daily life is affected – not just how cloudy the lens looks on exam.”

Can Cataracts Be Prevented?

While cataracts are mostly a natural part of ageing, Saruban emphasises that some lifestyle habits can help slow their progression. “Wearing UV-protective sunglasses, eating antioxidant-rich foods, not smoking, and managing conditions like diabetes all contribute to healthier eyes.”

What to Expect After Surgery

Most people recover quickly from cataract surgery, with significant vision improvement within a few weeks. “Some mild side effects – such as itchiness, dryness, blurry vision, or light sensitivity – are common but temporary,” he explains. “Serious complications are rare, especially when surgery is carried out by an experienced team.”

And once it’s gone, it’s gone. “A cataract can’t come back after the lens is removed and replaced,” he confirms.

Equal Care for NHS and Private Patients

Whether you’re an NHS or private patient at Optegra, you’ll receive the same expert care and attention. “Every patient deserves time, respect, and clear information,” says Saruban. “The only difference is that private patients may choose advanced lenses to reduce their dependence on glasses. But the surgical equipment, standards, and outcomes are the same.”

Mr Pasu’s Final Word of Advice

Saruban’s top tip for maintaining good eye health? “Get your eyes checked regularly. Avoid long periods of screen time without breaks, and treat dry or irritated eyes early with drops. Prevention and routine care go a long way.”

From the operating theatre in Brighton to eye clinics in Colombia and Somalia, Saruban Pasu’s dedication is unwavering. His message is simple: “Everyone deserves the chance to see clearly – wherever they are in the world.”
