Am I suitable for IOL-VIP surgery?

IOL-VIP (intraocular lens for visually impaired people) is a treatment often considered by those who suffer from dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Unlike a standard cataract extraction, in which your natural lens is replaced with a single artificial lens, two small lenses are inserted to give a telescopic effect. Designed to improve central vision, it’s a quick, straight-forward procedure that can improve your quality of life.

To assess your eligibility for the IOL-VIP procedure, you will have an in-depth consultation with one of our ophthalmic surgeons. They will identify if IOL-VIP surgery is the best treatment option for you. The general requirements include:

  • You have dry AMD or stable wet AMD
  • You have exhausted all drug-related treatment
  • You have moderate to severe loss of vision caused by AMD

It is also worth noting that unlike the IMT (implantable miniature telescope) procedure, you may still be eligible for the IOL-VIP treatment if you have had cataract surgery.

At Optegra, we understand that every patient is different, so we won’t know if the IOL-VIP surgery is right for you until you meet with our specialists for a unique consultation. Book a free private appointment today to discuss your individual circumstances with our experts, or attend one of our open days where our dedicated eye health specialists will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
