New partnership will benefit patients

Patients are expected to benefit from a new partnership between The University of Manchester and the leading eye care specialist Optegra.

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership will focus on a range of ophthalmic research projects to develop novel approaches for evaluating visual performance.

The project will also increase engagement with patients by providing the latest information on new treatments and technologies from the results of these research activities.

Dr Clare O’Donnell, Optegra’s Head of Eye Sciences said: “We are delighted to be working with The University of Manchester on this exciting new project. Optegra operates 23 eye hospitals in Europe and brings together research and medical expertise, state-of-the-art surgical equipment and top ophthalmic surgeons and clinicians. Optegra is committed to the development of eye sciences and championing the latest innovations in vision correction through our Eye Sciences Division.”

The project also aims to help develop frameworks for running large scale ophthalmological studies and clinical trials, in conjunction with our surgeon partners, manufacturers and suppliers of medical devices and treatments.

Dr Hema Radhakrishnan from the Faculty of Life Sciences at The University of Manchester will be working with Optegra’s group of specialist eye hospitals.

She’s excited about the project’s potential: “This partnership provides a unique opportunity to translate our research into clinical practice and to improve our knowledge and understanding of the very latest ophthalmologic treatments.”

Dr Andreas Hartwig has been appointed as Optegra’s KTP Research Associate and will work closely with Dr Radhakrishnan and Dr Clare O’Donnell for the duration of the project.

Dr O’Donnell says this is a significant partnership for Optegra: “This Knowledge Transfer Partnership gives Optegra the opportunity to work more closely with Academia to develop better treatments and to improve our understanding of visual performance for the benefit of our patients.”

Optegra is a leading specialist provider of ophthalmic services in the UK, Czech Republic, Poland and Germany.  The Knowledge Transfer Partnership with The University of Manchester commenced April 4th.
