Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon
Mr Shabbir Mohamed has been a consultant ophthalmologist at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) NHS Foundation trust since 2007. He graduated with an honours degree from Manchester University and completed his ophthalmology training in Birmingham.
He has undertaken advanced training in glaucoma as well as corneal and external diseases management. His current practice is in treating adult patients with complex glaucoma and he has developed the medical, laser and surgical glaucoma service at UHB since being appointed. He is the only ophthalmologist performing glaucoma surgery in the unit and receives complex tertiary referrals from colleagues as well as nearby units.
He is a sub-investigator in a Phase II multi-centre trial looking at a novel treatment for glaucoma and has been active in establishing links with the University to look at translational research in the fields of glaucoma and ocular surface disease.
His philosophy is that caring for patients to ease suffering is a great privilege and he is fortunate to be in a position of privilege in this sense. He has found that patients are the best teachers, if we only listen and are willing to learn from them.
Away from work, Shabbir enjoys five a side football as well as playing Badminton at a competitive level in the Birmingham league. Active participation in the local community as well as commitments to a global charity occupies the rest of his time. However, the most enjoyable time is spent with his young family.
